Add to basket39 unnumbered pages including a title-page on what appears to be handmade paper and 11 with large (but not full-page) color images (numbered I-V and I-V plus a final which is unnumbered. Softcover in original black wrapper. Thin folio (36 x 53 cm.). A few splits in narrow backstrip reglued. Modest white cover spotting and streaking. Numerous pencil underlinings and pencil notes; otherwise internally bright and clean. Pereira, a talented American abstract artist, poet and philosopher, was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts. This copy belonged to Winslow Ames, 1907-1990, an American art historian and museum director, whose less than glowing review of "The Lapis" appeared in the Summer 1958 issue of College Art Journal. Laid in is a typed letter, signed to William M. Ivins, Jr. (but addressed to him as William Ivins). The letter thanks Ivins for a letter and says that he is sending Ivins this book and a copy of his review (present). Ames apologizes for "messing up The Lapis with my pencilled notes" which notes (and underlinings) appear to have been added as Ames worked on reading and reviewing this work. The balance of the letter is about Saundertown, Rhode Island, where Ames and his wife were having a house built. Small colophon at end helps us identify this book as one of the 500 unnumbered copies of the first edition of 553 copies. The first edition also included 53 numbered copies specially bound with original water colors.
