Item description from seller

First UK edition. 8vo. Number 317 of 1000 copies, signed by the author to the limitation page. Publisher's quarter dark green morocco over green cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Top edges gilt. A fine copy. Double page map of South Africa on the end papers and 24 pages of black and white photographs. Nelson Mandela's autobiography, from his childhood in the Eastern Cape to his early political career and work as a lawyer. Mandela describes his imprisonment on Robben Island, where he began clandestinely writing this book, and in Pollsmoor Prison, and concludes with his walk to freedom twenty-seven years later. In 1994, Mandela was elected as South Africa's first black chief executive, and published his autobiography based off the manuscript he had written in prison. Mandela is remembered today for his fight against apartheid in South Africa and for his unwavering commitment to peaceful resistance, undiminished by decades of imprisonment. In 1993 he was awarded the Noble Peace Prize. The UN credits Mandela for "showing the extraordinary difference one person can make in building a better world." Mandela writes: "No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.".…
