About this Item
OTTLEY, Roi. THE LONELY WARRIOR: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF ROBERT S. ABBOTT. Chicago: Henry Regnery Company, 1955. 8vo., green cloth with gilt stamping on the spine; 381 pages. First Edition. Roi Ottley was an African-American journalist whose writings on political and racial issues in the military and on the home front were broadcast on WMCA's "New World A-Coming" radio programs from 1944 to 1957. Robert Sengstacke Abbott (1870-1940) was born in Georgia, the son of slaves. He obtained a law degree from Kent College of Law in Chicago but was unable to practice because of his race. In 1905 he founded "The Chicago Defender," which became to most-widely circulated black newspaper in the country. Abbott became one of the first self-made black millionaires in the process. This biography is scarce and I have been unable to locate any other copy for sale. Signed presentation from Ottley on the front endpaper: "For Marie & Ted with warmest personal regards, Roi O., Aug. 9, 1955." Very Good (some general wear covers with bit of light fraying & short tears at spine tips; contents clean & tight, gilt bright). $350.00. Seller Inventory # 1299
