Fighting for the affections of an often distant mother is a futile struggle that the young David is never going to win and never going to give up on, however, his inability to stay on the straight and narrow inevitably puts him on a collision course with the punitive justice system of the day, leading to his eventual committal to Approved School when just 11 years of age. David's early adventures are overflowing with a variety of unforgettably wonderful and occasionally even terrifying characters. For all the harshness, and there's a lot to endure, his story is filled with an irrepressible humour. The story is brought to life with colourfully drawn people and crazy situations that only true life really throws up.
