Bound in the original decorative cloth, with gold stamping on the spine, lightly rubbed with slight wear to extremities. Some light internal foxing; one small creasing cut to the upper right corner of the page bearing the Epstein illustration (not affecting image) possible stuck to previous page. Pages printed in black and red with gilt top edge. Contents bright. Collated and complete, including: Frontispiece portrait of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales Nine collotypes, Nine full-page illustrations Complete illustrations and numerous in-text decorations including original studies for "Gasse" by John Sargent. Commissioned by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor), The Legion Book was published to raise funds for the British Legion. A landmark in British book arts, it features contributions from 85 of the most celebrated writers and artists of the time, including: Winston Churchill, Rudyard Kipling, P.G. Wodehouse, Aldous Huxley, G.K. Chesterton, Vita Sackville-West, Hilaire Belloc, Edmund Blunden, Maurice Baring, John Masefield, Augustus John, William Nicholson, Eric Kennington, John Nash, Jacob Epstein, William Orpen, and many others. Captain James H.C. Minchin (1894 1966), a decorated veteran of the Cameronians and Royal Flying Corps, served as editor. While trade editions were printed in larger quantities, this deluxe edition was strictly limited to 600 copies, 500 of which were signed by the editor.
