1st Printing. Signed. 1291 pages. Published in 1994. Behemoth retrospective collection of film criticism. The Best of Pauline Kael, personally selected and edited by hers truly. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a regular first print run as a hardcover original only that, astonishingly enough, went into multiple subsequent printings. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Pauline Kael's "For Keeps: 30 Years At The Movies". 1300 pages, consisting of 275 essays, culled from her ten previous collections, now "condensed" in a "don't-drop-it-on-your-foot", five-pound volume. These are her finest and most representative essays, even according to her arch-nemesis, Renata Adler. "Think of this as the Riverside Shakespeare of New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael: It's not the complete works, but it's close enough. Nearly everything in it was written in the heat of the moment. As a record of American popular culture, it offers the eclectic reactions of one quirky intelligence" (Kirkus Reviews). "Between 1968 and 1991, as the regular film reviewer for The New Yorker Magazine, Pauline Kael used formidable tools to shape the tastes of a generation, enthralling readers for capturing, with force and fluency, the essence of an actor's gesture or the full implication of a cinematic image. She made her reviews a platform for considering both film and the world it engages, crafting in the process a prose style of extraordinary wit, precision, and grace" (Publisher's blurb). Pauline Kael was the quintessential Pop Phenom: The right person at the right place at the right time. She wrote about films - she preferred to call them movies, which is what they accurately are, moving pictures, not film negatives projected on a screen - when films still viscerally mattered. Today, movies no longer truly matter for most people as an art form nor even as entertainment. Of course, good, even great, films will continue to be made, and from every conceivable corner of the globe. Which Kael predicted would be the case, and which kept her going even as she declined with Parkinson's in the last, pain-filled years of her life. "Film criticism is exciting just because there is no formula to apply, just because you must use everything you are and everything you know" (Pauline Kael). An absolute "must-have" title for Pauline Kael collectors. This copy comes with an original 8 X 10 inch silver-gelatin print (of her favorite "author portrait"; it's the same one shown on the DJ Cover) that is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on the left-hand side by the author: "For - All best, Pauline Kael". The recipient-couple, who are named (but cannot be named here) were lifelong friends/supporters, who obtained the signed photograph directly from Pauline Kael. This title is a great book. This is the only copy (with Signed Souvenir Photograph) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Pauline Kael signed the print, NOT the book. Copies available online have serious flaws or are subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the National Book Award in 1973 for "Deeper Into Movies", the first book of film criticism recognized and honored as such. The most influential film critic of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PAULINE KAEL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0525938966.…
