Text is clean, bright and tight. Book as well as dust jacket are near fine. Also included is a letter (8 1/2" x 11 1/2") from the author discussing how he came to write about the topic of the book, plus three envelopes addressed by the author. Julius J. Fleming was a South Carolina teacher, clergyman, editor and lawyer who wrote roughly two hundred letters to the ¿Charleston Courier¿ during the Reconstruction Period of 1865-1871. In his letters, penned under the name ¿Juhl,¿ Fleming provides the reader a revealing portrait of the day-to-day struggles and chaos of everyday life in the conquered South - where their world has been turned upside down.
