A fine first edition, first impression, first printing, signed copy of Susanna Clarke's fantasy novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell in the black first state dust jacket, published in New York in 2004, two weeks earlier than the UK version. Neil Gaiman wrote that Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is unquestionably the finest English fantasy novel written in the last seventy years. A journey through light and shadow set in the time of Wellington when England needs the magic worked throughout the vast sweep of the story. Susanna Clarke won the World Fantasy Award - the Hugo Award - in 2005 for this novel, a highly praised mixture of historical realism and fantasy, providing an alternative history of England around the Napoleonic wars. The fine (as new and unread) book has black cloth covers, gold titles on the spine, no marker ribbon, red end papers and all edges are white, with the lead edge untrimmed as usual. The tight, bright book has no marks, bumps or writings over its 782 pages, other than Susanna Clarke's signature on the title page. The fine black dust jacket with the price in US dollars, is not price clipped, has no blemishes and has white titles on the cover and spine with an image of a white raven. The book has black and white illustrations throughout by Portia Rosenberg. The complete number line 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2 is displayed as well as the First U.S. Edition 2004. There is a notable difference between the young portrait of Susanna Clarke on the inside of the dust jacket of the UK edition compared to the more sophisticated photo in the American edition.A seven part drama series of the bestselling novel will screen on BBC One in May & June 2015. The movie rights had been sold to Time Warner's New Line Cinema, producer of JRR Tolkien movies. Clear removable archival film protects the dust wrapper. Seller Inventory # 000142
