Published in 1959, "Johnny Shiloh: A Novel of the Civil War" by James A. Rhodes and Dean Jauchius is a work of historical fiction that blends the legendary exploits of "Johnny Shiloh" with the life of the real-life soldier, John Lincoln Clem.

Narrative Focus: The book follows nine-year-old Johnny, who runs away from home to join the Union Army. Despite his age, he persists until he is accepted as a drummer boy, eventually proving his courage in the heat of battle.
Historical Figures: While Johnny is the protagonist, the authors use his journey to highlight the story of General George Thomas, known as the "Rock of Chickamauga". The novel explores Thomas's unwavering loyalty to the Union despite his Southern roots.
Maturity and Tone: Though the protagonist is a child, the book is noted for its adult themes and "horrifyingly sad" depictions of war. It explores Johnny's exposure to gambling and liquor, as well as the harsh realities and "facts of life" taught by his older, battle-hardened companions.
Historical Accuracy vs. Myth: The novel famously perpetuates the legend that Clem was at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. In reality, historical records indicate that Clem did not serve at Shiloh; his fame largely stems from his later actions at the Battle of Chickamauga, where he famously used a sawed-off musket to defend himself.
Goodreads
Cultural Impact
The book served as the primary inspiration for the 1963 Walt Disney television film Johnny Shiloh, starring Kevin Corcoran. This adaptation further solidified the "Johnny Shiloh" name in American folklore, making the fictionalized version of his life more famous than the historical facts.
