This is copy number 242 of 250 copies printed on India Ticonderoga paper, specially bound, and signed by Theressa Gay. Large in scope and detail, this is the first biography to be published on the New Jersey-born carpenter and sawmill operator who on January 24, 1848, reported the finding of gold at Coloma, California, launching the largest mining rush in American history. Prospectus laid in. Octavo: 558, [1], [1, blank] pp. with two color portraits and 25 illustrations, as well as the special inserts housed to the rear pocket. Original marbled paper-covered boards over a black leatherette spine with gilt-stamped borders and titling, and gold endpapers. A fine copy in the publisher's two-part slipcase, which is just starting along a lower seam. Seller Inventory # 79319
