Item description from seller

Inscribed First edition in red-brown cloth with spine lettered in gilt, and with cover lettered and bordered in blind. Full color frontispiece and three other b/w illustrations by A. C. Michael. Printer's imprint with code "F.135.1115" at base of p. 344. Scott 66: Whatmore F43. First edition, presentation copy inscribed on the half-title page: "To J. Stanley Little from H. Rider Haggard, Ditchingham May 1920", with Little's armorial bookplate neatly mounted below. James Stanley Little (1856-1940) was "a rather eccentric journalist and author of endless books on the British Empire" (Cheer, The Great Lablache, p.531) and South Africa in particular. Haggard and Little's shared interests were far from limited to South Africa, however, or even to the Empire: it was to Little that the author dedicated his 1921 nove, The Virgin and the Sun, set in Incan Peru, recalling that "Some thirty-and-five years ago it was our custom to discuss many matters, among them, I think, the history and romance of the vanished Empires of Central America". London: Cassell and Company (1916), 344 pages. Discreetly inked name and bookseller pencils to front end pages. Modestly toned spine, slight spine lean, top edge foxed, front hinge cracked, still a very good copy.…
