FIRST EDITION THUS 1964, an abridgement by Timothy Baker of 4 volumes of Churchill's History of the English-Speaking Peoples. Pasted onto the first free endpaper is the lower part of a typed letter signed in ink by WINSTON S. CHURCHILL to Frank O. Salisbury Esq., (portrait painter). Below Salisbury's name is written "For your book as promised" in blue ink. 4to, approximately 300 x 240 mm 12 x 9½ inches, illustrated throughout in colour and black and white, pages: [8], 1-312, finely bound by Bayntun Riviere, Bath, (their name on last free endpaper), half blue morocco over cloth covers, gilt ruled divides, 2 gilt lettered wine coloured labels and gilt decoration to spine, wine coloured gilt lettered morocco label to upper cover, gilt top edge, marbled endpapers, Henry Sotheran's ink stamp on first free endpaper. Binding slightly rubbed, 15 mm ( ¾ inch) crack to upper hinge, loss of marbled paper to edges of pastedowns, otherwise a very good copy. Frank O. Salisbury painted Winston Churchill's portrait on more occasions than any other artist; the 2 images of Churchill The Siren Suit and Blood, Sweat and Tears are both Salisbury paintings.
