Octavo (23cm); original pictorial card wrappers; [14],15-169,[7]pp. The dedication copy, inscribed by Coleman on the front endpaper to her mother and father: "For Mom & Pop w/love / Wanda Joyce" (the printed dedication reads: "for Lewana Mae Scott and George Evans"). Old dampstain affecting the upper 3/4 of the spine, some toning to upper front wrapper, with a faint tide mark to right edge of same, affecting a small (1") area on the right edge of the first 30pp; Very Good.The second full-length work by the noted African American poet from Watts, California known variously as the "L.A. Blueswoman" and "the unofficial poet laureate of Los Angeles." During her 30+ year career she received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the California Arts Council, and produced a sigificant body of work poetry, essays, and novels. Coleman's parents relocated to Los Angeles from Little Rock, Arkansas in 1931, after the lynching of a young man from a church steeple. Her father, an ex-boxer, ran a sign shop by day and a custodian by night; her mother worked as both a seamstress and housekeeper for Ronald Reagan. A significant copy of an early work.
