Scholarly and magisterial 'opus' on the life and work of one of the twentieth century's most important 'fathers' of literary criticism, Ivor Armstrong Richards. [Some students of literature will recall Richards' advocacy of 'close' reading]. A teacher of 'Basic' English in China - one of his cherished ambitions for the Chinese in the 1930s - Richards was also a figure of some pre-eminence in C20 mountaineering, an important facet of Richards' life given its true significance by Russo - as is consideration of Richards' wife, Dorothy ('Dorothea') Richards, an important figure in C20 women's mountaineering as Dorothy Pilley). 843 pages printed and bound on 2-tone grey and blue boards. In Near-fine condition throughout. B. & w. photographs. With non-clipped, dust-jacket in VG condition - very small 'rubs' and some darkening to inner. Large 8vo - heavy book to post, additional postage may be requested.
