About this Item
Very Good in tan cloth. No dustjacket. Quarto. 40 pages of text plus 28 full-page, full-color plates by Edwin Earle. Externally, there are a few small soil-marks, particularly on the rear board. The tips and spine-ends have light rubbing wear. As is common with this title, there is a bit of darkening around the perimeters of the pastedowns; this is due, it would seem, to the glue used in production. The pages of the text are slightly yellowed, though the plates -- on a superior, gloss-coated stock -- are quite bright. All pages are clean; no previous ownership markings. The binding is sound and square with all pages and plates intact. This is an association copy, SIGNED and dedicated by the author to Harry Hoijer, an esteemed professor and anthropologist working in the West and Southwest. Overall, a nice copy of a scarce book. ".The dances of the Pueblo Indians have attracted visitors from all parts of the world. These dances are the most elaborate and colorful performances still carried on by the Indians of the States, and many white visitors have gone to the Southwest to wonder at these rites of receiving the gods visibly present among mortals and impersonated by them. The dances are rewarding enough merely as spectacles, but that is only a small part of their significance in Pueblo life. To the Indians themselves they are each one a scene in the drama of the gods and their relation with men, a drama that runs through the whole year and sustains the well-being of the village.
