Item description from seller

First editions, presentation copies, of volumes III and IV of the "bible" of the women's suffrage campaign, the only two volumes published by Anthony herself; inscribed in each volume by Anthony on the occasion of her 85th birthday to her cousin Joshua. Both are inscribed on initial blanks, "To Joshua Anthony. Ushers - N.Y. From his cousin Susan B. Anthony. Rochester - N.Y. Feb. 15. 1905"; volume four bears the additional note, "This is my 85th birthday - It will be ten more years if I reach the age of my - of our - grandfather Anthony - Humphrey." She would, however, die the following year. Joshua (1841-?) was the son of John Anthony (1800-1882), Susan's father's younger brother, and the founder and manager of Anthony & Co., a New York-based manufacturer famous for its spices and "Anthony's Universal Baking Powder". History of Woman Suffrage offers "a vast compendium of reminiscences, reports, arguments, and commentaries unevenly shaped by the logic of the suffrage cause and its leading proponents. The making of the History was at once a profoundly personal and self-consciously political venture. Few social movements have been graced with leaders who could assemble, organise, and comment on such a vast amount of information [and] the prime mover for the History was Susan B. Anthony" (Buhle, p. xvii-xviii). The first four volumes of the History of Woman Suffrage were the only ones published during Anthony's lifetime (the first published in 1881, the second in 1882, both by Fowler & Wells in New York); the work was eventually expanded to six volumes, the final two being published by the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1922 (NAWSA). See Mari Jo and Paul Buhle, eds., The Concise History of Women Suffrage, University of Illinois Press, 2005. 2 vols, large octavo. Complete with numerous steel engravings with tissue guards to vol. III, the Phebe A. Hanaford plate opposite p. 337 supplied; copperplate and photogravure engravings to vol. IV; both with tissue-guarded frontispieces. Original maroon wavy-grain cloth, spines lettered and ruled in gilt, thick border stamped in blind to boards, decorative vine-patterned endpapers to vol. III, plain endpapers to vol. IV. Light shelfwear to both vols. Vol. III: two minor marks to spine, binding a little shaken with front board tender (not affecting inner hinge), top edge of book block foxed, bottom corner of pp. 17-18 creased. Vol. IV: two small holes to front joint, a couple of marks to top edge of book block. In all an excellent set, the contents crisp and clean.…
