[PARRY, Richard.] The History of Kington; with an Appendix. Kington: Charles Humphreys, 1845. First edition. Octavo, with half-title and folding table; modern cloth, edges uncut. Contains at pp. 66–70 ALFRED RUSSEL WALLACE’S prize essay On the Best Method of Conducting the Kington Mechanic’s Institution, signed “Mr. A. Wallace” (Smith S1a), written about 1841 when he was a young surveyor in Kington. Called by R. Elwyn Hughes Wallace’s “first substantial writing” (Dictionary of Welsh Biography), and by C. H. Smith “one of the earliest written works by Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913) known to have reached print.” Very good; title-page lightly toned with small spots and a faint fore-margin stain, light dust-soiling and scattered foxing, a few small marks, folding table mended after a tear.

Store description

Atelier Zweig Rare Books is based in Marina del Rey, California, and was founded by a couple of bibliophiles, writers, and artists who view the book as a total work of art, uniting text, material, design, and history. We specialize in books of lasting cultural impact or controversy, books whose aesthetic qualities form a complete artistic statement, and books with significant provenance. We buy and sell as collectors first and dealers second, and we value our community of established and emerging bibliophiles who regard books as living cultural artifacts. Guided by the philosophy of Stefan Zweig, we see collecting not as accumulation, but as a creative and custodial act—in which collecting itself becomes an art of creation. Additional curatorial highlights can be found under @atelierzweig or www.atelierzweig.com…
