Item description from seller

1998. viii, 87pp. Pat Dennison's personal copy with her signature to the top of the title page. The book is in excellent condition with no inscriptions. B&W images, maps and plans throughout. Folding colour map to rear. "The famous abbey of Melrose dominates both the town and its history. The original twelfth-century monastery developed into the later medieval abbey, and beside it grew the lay settlement of Melrose. In the early seventeenth century the township (by then expanding into the old abbey precincts) was formally elevated to the status of a burgh. Historic Melrose is a fascinating study of the town's history and archaeology, from its origins up to the nineteenth century. This book is part of the Scottish burgh survey-a series designed to identify which areas of Scotland's historic burghs are of archaeological interest.".
