When I was a youth working on the ranch, I learned the priority given the work horses whose labor was indispensible for the operation of the farm. So it followed that they did not have to wait to be watered and fed; for their harnesses to be removed; for a comforting curry-comb and brush-down; a check of their hooves and hide; for their stalls to be swept clean. No matter how tired or hungry, we cared for the horses before we looked after ourselves.
