Ticknor, the author's grandfather, and the founder of the publishing house Ticknor and Fields. Among his famous authors was Nathaniel Hawthorne, a close friend and traveling companion. Many lively letters from Hawthorne to Ticknor are quoted here, most written during his consulship in Liverpool. A letter from Washington includes a wonderful description of Lincoln. Light sunning to spineand part of front cover, else fine.
