Exceptionally rare Uncorrected Proof made even more scarce by the signature and inscription by Carpenter on the half title page, For D.M.A With Love and Splendor and then signed by the author. This is Carpenters first novel published by Harcourt and Brace in 1966. His novels were not read, at the time, by wide audiences and to support himself he wrote screenplays in Hollywood including the Rip Torn Film, Payday which was filmed in 1972. Carpenters books depicted the seedy, marginal characters, such as pool sharks, criminals, drug dealers, and taken from his time in Hollywood, movie moguls. Critics and writers alike, praised his work and he was best friends with fellow writer Richard Brautigan, who tragically took his own life in 1984. This was said to haunt Carpenter. Eerily, Carpenter would himself, commit suicide after facing increasing illness and debilitating health issues in 1995. More recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in his body of work and most notably, this novel, his first, which I have to say even after reading it 5 years ago sticks with me to this day. I think he is one of the greatest forgotten voices from the 60 s 70s.
