Gertz was called by many the successor to Clarence Darrow in taking on hopeless cases; among those clients he discusses here are Nathan Leopold, Henry Miller, and Otto Eisenschiml. It doesn't say so in the book, but if anyone's interested in provenance, this copy belonged to a fellow Chicagoan whose dislike of Gertz was equalled by Gertz's dislike of him: hence the lack of a personal inscription 381 p.
