Hunting the Big Five, published by Safari Press in 2000, is an outstanding handmade, letterpress book, issued in a unique, limited edition of 376 copies, never to be printed again. The Full Leather Edition was limited to 26 copies, A-Z, each one housed in a linen clamshell box. The Deluxe Edition, described below, was limited to 350 numbered copies with a slipcase. This extraordinary book contains the hunting narratives of world-renowned African professional hunter Robin Hurt on each of the African Big Five: the elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, and buffalo. Robin Hurt is universally recognized as the preeminent professional hunter in Africa today. His safari company has not only guided more sportsmen to 200-pound leopards than any other, but also has guided clients to outstanding trophies in the most famous game fields of the Dark Continent, including Zaire, the Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Ethiopia, and more. The illustrator, highly acclaimed wildlife artist Alan James Robinson, has been a designer and illustrator of letterpress books for over twenty years. The books from his award-winning press, Press of the Sea Turtle, have been eagerly sought by collectors the world over. His titles include Birds and Beasts of Shakespeare, A Fowl Alphabet, An Odd Bestiary, Saltwater Grand Slam, and Trout & Bass. These books are in the collections of the Library of Congress, National Library of Australia, New York Public Library, Folger Shakespeare Library, and the Kadama Collection of Shakespearean Literature, Japan. This stunning production contains the stories of Hurt s most famous hunts for some of the finest trophies ever to come from the continent of Africa. We guarantee they will enthrall, unnerve, and fascinate you and make you wish for more. To top it off, the gorgeous illustrations and artwork by Robinson will leave you breathless. Like all works of art, this book is a unique treasure sought the world over, but only a handful of people are able to possess this finely crafted historic monument to the art of the African hunt. Specifications for the Deluxe Edition of Hunting the Big Five: Each book was handmade, typeset by hand and monotype, with hand-printed etchings, wood engravings, and lithographs. The paper, handmade from rags, is 100% acid-free. The books were printed letterpress under the painstaking attention of master printers. Letterpress, the process of printing from letters or type in relief (rather than from intaglio plates or Plano graphically), is the traditional form of printing used in the nineteenth century. Every copperplate etching by Alan James Robinson is hand drawn and printed by hand on fine French art paper. These limited-edition letterpress books are works of art with the look and feel of a tradition long since gone. It was the 32nd book in Safari Press s Classics in African Hunting Series.
