Mild bit of jacket wear only; tiny nonauthorial gift inscription on front flyleaf. A tight and attractive first edition, signed large and bold by Macartney in blue ballpoint on title page. E.B. Long critiques this as "Standard interpretations of Grant's relations with thirteen of his leading generals [Meade, Logan, Smith, Thomas, Wilson, Butler, Rawlins, Halleck, Sherman, Sheridan, Burnside, McPherson and McClernand]; the author, a prolific writer of Civil War studies, paints Sheridan in unfavorable colors."
