Add to basket1st printings of the first Canadian hardcover editions of The Golden Mean and The Sweet Girl, and both are SIGNED by Lyon on the title page in black ink. This copy of The Sweet Girl is also DATED by the author in the YEAR of PUBLICATION, 27 Oct 12. These two books constitute the author's duology of novels set in ancient Greece - one from the masculine and one from the feminine perspectiive. They form a complete set because Lyon has said she does not plan to write a third book set in the period. These copies are in fine/fine condition with sharp corners, and the jackets are bright, crisp and price intact. The Golden Mean reimagines the relationship between the legendary philosopher Aristotle and his most famous pupil, Alexander the Great. It won the Rogers Writers Trust Fiction Prize and was nominated for the Giller Prize, Governor Generals Award for Fiction, and the Commonwealth Writers Prize. The Sweet Girl is Pythias, daughter to Aristotle, and a fiercely intelligent young woman who strains against the period's dismissive attitudes to her sex. When Alexander the Great dies, sentiment turns against anyone associated with him, and Aristotle and his family are forced to flee Athens. Ailing and with a broken spirit, Aristotle soon dies, and his orphaned daughter discovers that the world is a place of superstition, not logic, and that her personal aspirations will require every ounce of wit she possesses. Longlisted for the Giller Prize. Also available from this bookseller are autographed Canadian firsts of Lyon's first two books of fiction: Oxygen and The Best Thing For You. Canadian orders will be charged GST.
