This intriguing copy bears a full-page presentation inscription in blue ink from co-author Goetz on the front flyleaf: "To Governor Stevenson -- / With my gratitude for a / matchless and cherished poli- / tical education -- / Even though it taught me / these somber political truths: / That being right does not / win elections / That being eloquent does / not win elections / That being wise, witty and / sensitive does not win / elections. / But all these things do bring abiding / satisfaction to those of us who / went the long road with you. / Rachel Goetz / August 6, 1957 / Please do write the book I've been / urging on you -- and let me help." Goetz knew whereof she spoke, having joined Stevenson's staff in 1955 as a speechwriter for the grueling 1956 presidential campaign, the governor's second. This delightful and insightful description, which seems as true today as it did almost eighty years ago, neatly summarizes many common sentiments about Stevenson's strengths and weaknesses in his battles against Eisenhower: That he was a powerful speaker full of wit and wisdom, but that his intellectual approach (it was Ike who called him "egghead") failed to overcome the general's down-to-earth populist approach. Goetz (1904-94) was a notable Chicago civic leader.
