Inscribed by the author to his editor at Harper & Brothers, Simon Michael Bessie: "For my Pal Mike. Bill Eastlake". The noted southwestern writer's first book and first volume in the Checkerboard Trilogy about the Bowman family and their relationships with the Navajo and each other. Eastlake was an acclaimed short story writer when in early 1955 he was contacted by Simon Michael Bessie, general-editor at Harper's, suggesting that he try his hand at a novel. In February of the following year Eastlake submitted a novel based on his trader stories titled "Indian County". After four extensive revisions and several title changes the finished book was published in October, 1956. This copy came from the personal library of Bessie and is an important association copy. A very good copy with some light wear to the spine tips. The text is very good with some light wear. There is some light browning to the pastedowns and some foxing to the top edge of the textblock but the pages themselves are clean. The jacket is worn with some light soiling to the rear panel and some chipping to the spine tips and edges, rear flap fold and a closed tear to the bottom of the spine. There is a small section chipped away from the lower front panel and lower rear panel.
