With the bookplate of Anna Richmond Taylor, of Baltimore. Severn Teackle Wallis (1816-1894), also of Baltimore, was "proficient in Spanish literature and history and was elected a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of history of Madrid in 1843. He may have been an acquaintance of the budding poet and author Edgar Allan Poe (1808-1849), along with his friend, the author and political figure John Pendleton Kennedy" (Wikipedia). Presentation copy, inscribed to "Mrs. John H. Thomas with the kind regards of S. T. Wallis 17th Nov. 1850." Among the ads are those for Melville's Redburn, Typee, Omoo, and Mardi.
