Synopsis:
More than perhaps any programme GQT embodies the essence of Radio Four. For over 50 years it has been at, or near the top of, the radio charts and now draws 1.3 million listeners each week and broadcasts 45 programmes each year. Recordings attract dedicated audiences of between 250 and 750 ¿ depending on the size of the venue. The GQT ¿millennium¿ programme was a compilation of the top ten most asked questions over 50 years (the number one question is ¿how can I control slugs in the garden¿). When researching this programme it appeared that over the years there are just 400 or so questions or variants of questions which cover 95% of all the those asked. The book will be a compilation of these questions and answers. Section one will be the top ten, followed by five sections: Pests & Diseases, Fruit, Veg, Ornamentals, Trees & Shrubs with the 80 most asked questions in each. The answers keep the chatty style of the show but incorporate appropriate specialist information, organic alternatives from Bob Flowerdew, pest treatments from Pippa Greenwood, design tips from Nigel Colborn and so on. The book will be illustrated with line drawings and colour photographs to illustrate diseases and techniques and each Q&A will take up between ½ page and two pages. There will be a comprehensive cross-reference index ¿ in the manner of our ¿Trade Secrets¿ book.
Review:
All seasoned gardeners know Gardeners' Question Time. Sunday lunchtime would not be Sunday lunchtime unless they tuned in to listen to gardening advice from experts, delivered with wry humour and the occasional discursive bantering. Be it in the "Potting Shed" or a village hall, you are guaranteed a laugh coupled with tips of the week and solid horticultural knowledge from acknowledged experts in their fields. Started over fifty years ago, the world's longest running gardening programme has amassed a core of oft-asked questions. As long ago as the end of the war people were having problems with slugs and snails and organic gardening, all as pertinent now as then. This book is a collection of the 350 most frequently posed. The contributors are all regulars of Eric Robson, the Chair, and include specialist expertise such as organic gardening (Bob Flowerdew), greenhouse gardening (Anne Swithinbank), garden design (Bunny Guiness), pests and diseases (Pippa Greenwood) and general cultivation (John Cushnie). With all that experience mixed together the book gives a rounded picture to all queries presented. Each question is answered by the relevant expert but also accompanied by any other thoughts from the other contributors. A must for all GQT listeners, a must for all gardeners and a conversion aid to all those people not yet ensnared by this endearing British institution. - Lucy Watson
