How as an amateur he won the US Open in 1913 in a playoff against two established champions of the game, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. When he won the US Amateur in 1914, he personally relished that victory more sweetly. Ouimet also repeated the US Amateur win in 1931. Later, Ouimet became the first American Captain of the R & A and a true ambassador for the sport. PERIOD INSCRIPTION AND AUTOGRAPH ON THE REAR OF THE FRONTISPIECE IN FLOWING SCRIPT: "FOR DICK MITTON 'WITH REGARDS', FRANCIS OUIMET" IN BLACK FOUNTAIN PEN. Front cover clean, red color on flag decoration complete, no scratches or stains. Rear cover has a small water stain on the edge, darkened in areas. Pastedowns tanned, slight offset through to the title page, very scattered light foxing. No former owner name or bookplate, no marginalia, underlining, creases, tears, soiling etc. Scarce unclipped dust jacket has old cello tape along the upper spine edge, else in very good condition, now protected by mylar. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
