1899 London, 1st edn, 611pp, 15 hand-colored plates, limited to 500 numbered copies signed by Rowland Ward. Cornerstone to anybody's African library. Probably the most sought after of all 5 Lydekker's books on the big-game of the world. (For an unknown reason H. Anderson Bryden is listed as the general editor for the Africa volume, although Lydekker did most of the work for this book as well as the other 4.) Contributions by Kirby, Selous, Neumann, Pease, etc. Covers all African game animals with terrific illustrations. Each and every color plate was colored by hand. The illustrations depict most of the African game animals known at that time, and certainly all the major animals such as rhino, elephant, leopard, lion, etc. An absolutely beautiful book that you will cherish for years to come. A very good copy bound in the original full green cloth binding. Gilt bright, plates bright and fresh condition, original printed tissue guards. The cloth is NOT FADED anywhere which is near impossible to find on these books. Minimal, very slight shelf wear, corners not bent. Inner hinges in good shape. Small minor marks on spine, possibly insect caused, we will send photos upon request. Inscribed & dated by P.B. van der Byl, a famous Victorian era hunter who contributed to several hunting tomes.
