A scarce first printing of the true first edition - the printer's page states 'First published in Great Britain 1981' with no other printings stated. The novel won both the Whitbread Book Award for a first novel and the Somerset Maugham Award in 1981 and was quickly reprinted. ***This copy has been SIGNED by the author on the title page. ***Very good in light-brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly creased, with a very small crease to the bottom edge of the front board. Corner tips sharp. Light vertical reading creases to the spine. Page block edges nice and clean. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally the book is also very good with no inscriptions, other than the author's signature. Small mark to the front free endpaper. Light creasing to the top corners of the first few pages - not very noticeable (please see scans). No serious creasing or tears. Pages clean with no foxing. ***In a very good colour-illustrated dustwrapper, which has been neatly price-clipped at the bottom of the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete, with no significant faults - just some light creasing to the edges. No serious creases, chips or tears. The spine of the dustwrapper is only very slightly faded (much less than is usually found) and the red titles on the spine are almost unfaded (please see scans). ***224mm x 140mm. 251 pages. ***'William Boyd was born in Accra, Gold Coast, (present-day Ghana), to Scottish parents, both from Fife, and has two younger sisters. His father Alexander, a doctor specialising in tropical medicine, and Boyd's mother, who was a teacher, moved to the Gold Coast in 1950 to run the health clinic at the University College of the Gold Coast, Legon (now the University of Ghana). In the early 1960s the family moved to western Nigeria, where Boyd's father held a similar position at the University of Ibadan. Boyd spent his early life in Ghana and Nigeria and, at the age of nine, went to a preparatory school and then to Gordonstoun school in Scotland, and, after that, to the University of Nice in France, followed by the University of Glasgow, where he gained an M.A. (Hons) in English & Philosophy, and finally Jesus College, Oxford. His father died of a rare disease when Boyd was 26. Between 1980 and 1983 Boyd was a lecturer in English at St Hilda's College, Oxford, and it was while he was there that his first novel, "A Good Man in Africa" (1981), was published. He was also television critic for the New Statesman between 1981 and 1983. William Boyd was selected in 1983 as one of the 20 "Best of Young British Novelists" in a promotion run by Granta magazine and the Book Marketing Council. (Wiki) ***William Boyd has written a brilliantly funny novel which evokes memories of Kingsley Amis, Tom Sharpe and Malcolm Bradbury and is yet totally original. The amazing, accident-prone Morgan Leafy is glorious creation.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A first printing of the true first edition, complete in its original dustwrapper - this copy SIGNED. This was William Boyd's first novel and first published book, and is extremely hard to find in the first printing. Signed copies are even scarcer, and very desirable. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. …
