About this Item
WELCH Jr., Robert H.W. MAY GOD FORGIVE US. Chicago: Henry Regnery Company, [1952]. Small 8vo., green cloth in dust jacket. First Edition. First hardbound edition, third printing. A famous letter giving the historical background of Gen. MacArthur. Welch gives the historcal background of events which culminated in the dismissal of Gen. MacArthur. Welch, a retired Boston candy manufacturer, founded the John Birch Society in 1958 for the purpose of combating communism and promoting various ultraconservative agendas. The name derives from John Birch, an American Baptist missionary killed by Chinese communists in 1945. Welch traces the Communist uprising in China in this book. Signed presentation from Welch to Owen Brewster, Chairman of the U.S. Senate War Investigating Committee, who himself joined the John Birch Society in 1959: "For Owen Brewster, with king regards and all good wishes, Robert H.W. Welch Jr." Journalist Drew Pearson exposed a deal between Brewster and Pan American airlines to pursuade the United States to set up an official monopoly under the airline's control. Brewster, at the same time, was investigating two $18 million and $22 million contracts awarded to Howard Hughes to construct a plywood seaplane, later known as the "Spruce Goose." Politics was obviously behind each investigation. While copies of Welch's later "The Life Of John Birch" (1954) are not uncommon, it appears this title is difficult to find. A nice association copy in a scarce book. Near fine; little wear & soil (small stain front cover) d/j. $350.00. Seller Inventory # 590
