About this Item
Stated First Printing, First Edition. Flat-signed on the second front end paper (see photo). A signed first printing is quite rare. You can see the covers of the book in the photos (feel free to contact me if you would like to see more photos, I'm limited here to five). There is spotting and toning off of the edges of both the front and rear covers. There are also two scratches on the front cover. There are several tiny spots of rubbing on the rear middle edge, a few can also be seen on the white edge of the rear inside cover. That's also the case with the white edge of the front inside cover, with tiny bits of the white chipped off, in both cases only on both sides of the bottom corners. I don't see any rubbing on the top and bottom edges. There are a few slightly darkened spots. The corners are in nice condition, only the front bottom one has a tiny spot of light rubbing. The spine is in pretty good shape. There's crinkling at both ends. The gilt and blue lettering is still fairly bright. The top page edge looks to be a very light blue, some of the blue has faded. There are also three small spots on the top page edge. However, none make their way onto the actual pages. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. They did a good job. There is an occasional tiny nick at one of the two edges, but no tears on any of the text pages. There are three small tan spots on the bottom page edge, but again none made their way onto the actual pages. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The reason for the only Good condition rating for the book is due mainly to the soiling on the covers, the other imperfections are not terribly conspicuous. The interior of the book is in very good condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. I turned over every one. I found only two instances of a speck-sized light spot, both at the margin, quite insignificant. The pages are also nicely bright. I didn't see any conspicuous creasing. There are no placeholder creases. I did have to flatten a tiny bit of paper folded in above the tip of one bottom corner, leaving a little crease. A few pages leading up to this page have a tiny crease just above the tip of their bottom corners, probably the result of this little bit of paper being folded in. There is one tear but it's on the second blank white rear end paper (the first and last end papers are blue). The tear is off the bottom edge. It goes up 5/16th of an inch and then across 1/2 of an inch. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And Ms. de Havilland's signature is the only writing to be found in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. There is one small tear off the front top edge, a sliver of loss at the spine's bottom edge, some light soiling. The flaps look very good. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. 'Dame Olivia Mary de Havillandwas one of the leading actresses of her time. At the time of her death in 2020 at age 104, she was the oldest living and earliest surviving Academy Award winner and was widely considered as being the last surviving major star from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema. Her younger sister was Oscar-winning actress Joan Fontaine. De Havilland is probably best known for her role as Melanie Hamilton in Gone with the Wind, for which she received her first of five Oscar nominations. She later distinguished herself for performances in Hold Back the Dawn, To Each His Own, The Snake Pit, and The Heiress, receiving nominations for Best Actress for each and winning for To Each His Own and The Heiress. She was also successful in work on stage and television. She received honors such as the National Medal of the Arts, the Légion d'honneur, and the appointment to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (at the age of 101).'.
