Two quarto volumes (11 x 7 1/2 inches; 280 mm.). xii, [2], 418; xi, [1, blank], [2], 484 pp. Thirty-three black and white plates and 124 text illustrations. Title-page printed red and black. Original quarter vellum over natural linen boards, with front cover and spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. Spines very slightly soiled, corners lightly bumped. Top edge of text block gilt, others uncut. "Of the three great political upheavals which have altered the face of the world -- the American, French, and Russian revolutions -- only the French has stimulated literary masterpieces" (PMM). The Scottish author, critic, and thinker Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was a major influence on Victorian society. His history of the French Revolution, written more as a "prose epic, teeming with colourful scenes of dramatic events and imaginative portraits of the leading revolutionaries…moulded the popular conception of the French Revolution to the present day" (PMM). Here the eventful text is accompanied by Edmund Joseph Sullivan s (1869-1933) illustrations, which blend Art Nouveau with Rococo in a style comparable with of Aubrey Beardsley (Ray), a perfect fit for narration about the end of the French aristocracy.
