"John Charles Fre?mont's long life was packed with remarkable experiences. His story stands as a model for young Americans--a record of accomplishment and patriotism--a life filled with excitement and adventure. A natural curiosity about people and places was in Fre?mont's blood. His career, the road that led to fame as The Pathfinder and to his campaign for the presidency, began with a surveying trip for the United States government. Other surveys followed, leading to expeditions headed by Fre?mont and to world-wide renown. Expeditions in those days required stamina and tremendous courage. Battles had to be fought with Nature as well as Indians. Mrs. Smith successfully creates the excitement, the terror, and the triumphs, using Fre?mont's own words, as well as her own. Fre?mont is vividly portrayed, as are his friend and fellow-explorer Kit Carson, and other important and well-known characters who affected Fre?mont's life, such as Senator Thomas Hart Benton, his daughter Jessie, whom Fre?mont married, Presidents Van Buren, Tyler, Polk, and Taylor, and many others. Fre?mont played a large part in the opening of the West, and made a genuine contribution to the growth and history of the United States. The story of his life is thrilling and, Mrs. Smith has presented it, eminently readable". Fredrika Shumway Smith wrote stories for her four children and ten grandchildren, and late in life began to publish. She began by penning children's verse about animals and other stories. They were compiled into four books: The House in the Tree (1941); The Magic Stairway (1942); The Magic City (1949), and Marco the Monkey (1951). From the late 1940s through the 1960s she also wrote novels, mysteries, and biographies for young adults. She was the wife of banker and Northern Trust president Solomon A. Smith.
