Posted to Italy as a young 20 year old he saw fierce fighting around Anzio and kept diaries detailing that experience. This resulting memoir is recognised as a classic wartime account on the Battle of Anzio. Postwar, he wrote other books about the Italy he had fallen in love with. This is a rare first edition that has been signed by the author to "Barbara with much love from Raleigh Christmas 1956 (see photo) (From research Barbara could well be the renowned children's book author Barbara Picard)? Blue boards with gold writing on the spine. The dust jacket is good only having a couple of minor tears on the top section. 222 pages size 150mm x 220mm Book is embossed with stamp on first flyleaf.
