8vo. First edition. Original lilac cloth, gilt. Top edge stained lilac. Colour lithograph frontispiece and jacket by John Piper. Spine slightly faded. Top edge stain a bit faded. Endpapers slightly foxed. Author's presentation, in green ink, on fly. Unclipped d/w is tanned on the spine, slightly foxed and with a few light marks to the lower part of the back panel. Very good + in very good + d/w. Author's Note: Fanny by Gaslight was concerned with the amusements (predominantly vicious) of rich people in London during the seventies of last century. Forlorn Sunset is a story of the same period, but presents the evil folk who pandered to those amusements, and the miseries (and therefrom arising vices) of their poor and helpless victims. Michael Sadleir has dated his inscription 'Jan '46' when he meant 1947.
