Review
It is unique... The author has combed through an impressive variety of sources and has been especially deft in weaving together contemporary (and originally classified) documents with subsequent accounts and/or memoirs. The result is a work of sustained interest, lively in style, and... on target in its judgments.

Barry Katz's history of the Research and Analysis Branch of O.S.S. in World War II reveals how surprisingly useful a group of historians and social scientists proved to be in war, and the impact of this taste of the real world on a select band of scholars, both exercises in intellectual history. As a participant in these doings some forty-odd years ago, I was amazed how much more a historian can know from archives and interviews than the players remember. A lively and informative book.
