Carsten Borchgrevinkâ s First on the Antarctic Continent (1901) documents the British Antarctic Expedition of 1898â "1900, the first expedition to winter over on the Antarctic mainland and a landmark in the history of polar exploration. Funded by the publisher Sir George Newnes, Borchgrevink led the Southern Cross party to Cape Adare, where his team endured the harsh Antarctic winter while conducting meteorological, magnetic, and biological research. Though often overshadowed by later, more celebrated expeditions, Borchgrevinkâ s account highlights both the immense hardships and the significant scientific contributions of his venture, including the first systematic studies of Antarctic fauna and climate.
