First Printing (stated) in original $15.55-priced dust jacket SIGNED by Edward Feigenbaum with lengthy personalized inscription to Willis Ware, thanking him for being "one of the first to call attention to the problem" discussed by the book; Ware (1920-2013) was a pioneer in the history of computing during and after the war and veteran of the Institute for Advance Study's Electronic Computer Project at Princeton University under John von Neumann and an ealy design engineer on the Rand Corporation's JOHNNIAC computer; also while at Rand (1952-1992), he was the founding president of the American Federation of Information Processing Societies and authored the highly influential report to the Defense Science Board for ARPA (later DARPA) known as the Ware report; Feigenbaum was a Turing Award winner (1994) who studied under Herbert A. Simon at Carnegie Mellon and is considered - along with Simon - a founding father of Artificial Intelligence and one of the originators of the concept of knowledge-based expert systems, systems which form the basis for the Japanese Fifth Generation project, the subject of this book; also included is a xeroxed review of the book by Joseph Weizenbaum, author of the landmark 1976 AI critique, Computer Power and Human Reason, laid in with a cover letter from Fred Weingarten of the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, who early explored the impact of new digital technologies in intellectual property law, which he predicted would only worsen with the advance of technology and the circumscription of "fair use"; jacket very nice with only slight sun to the spine region and one closed tear to rear panel corner at flap fold & nicked scratch mid-panel, burgundy cloth boards sharp-cornered, binding tight pages bright & unfoxed but with faint mustiness overall (Ware lived a few blocks from the beach in Santa Monica, California), an excellent clean tight signed copy with fascinating & unique associations (dj in mylar protector); 8vo; (x) 275pp indexed.
