About this Item
First edition. Pictorial mustard yellow cloth stamped in red and black. Front hinge neatly repaired, some modest loss of cloth and a small glue remnant at the crown, overall a near very good copy with the bookplate of notable poet Edmund Clarence Stedman on the front pastedown and Agnes Neustadt's decorative bookplate (illustrated by Frederick Spenceley) on the front fly. Penciled name ("Stedman") probably in his hand on the title page. Tipped-in is a three-page (three pages of a single fold leaf) Autograph Letter Signed by Royce to Stedman dated May 8, 1890. The letter begs forgiveness for his failure to write earlier, thanking Stedman for a dinner given in his honor at the Author's Club, and asking Stedman to convey to the Board of the Club that he would like to gain out-of-town membership in the Club. Josiah Royce, born in Grass Valley, California, was best known as one of the great American philosophers, whose work at Harvard also had a profound effect on the philosophy of logic as it influenced mathematics. He was unusual among American philosophers for his interest and writings on history, particularly of his birth state of California, which inspired this novel. Shortly after publishing this novel, Royce had a nervous breakdown requiring him to take a leave of absence from his academic duties, and indeed in the letter he references the pressures of those duties.
