H., der Kindheit und Werdegang in seinen literarisch am besten geglückten Büchern "Joggeli" (1902) und "Tobias Heider" (1922) beschrieb, war neben Ernst Zahn der erfolgreichste Vertreter des Schweizer Heimatromans. In einfacher, aber zu dramat. Emphase neigender Sprache schildert er den Einbruch der modernen Technik ("An heiligen Wassern" 1898, bis 1958 744'000 verkaufte Exemplare; "Felix Notvest" 1908) und des Fremdenverkehrs ("Der König der Bernina" 1900) in die von urtüml. Menschen bewohnte Gebirgslandschaft. Im Buch "Der Wetterwart" (1905) entwirft H. aus der Sicht eines Ballonfahrers ein illusionslos-pessimist. Weltbild» (HLS).
