About this Item
First Edition (NAP). Here is a fun listing which prompted a little research that yielded a little something. When I googled the author's name it brought up a story from 2013 in the Star Tribune, a newspaper in Minnesota. The story was about a house, a rather grand and beautiful six-bedroom Tudor that was built in 1907 and is situated across from Lake Calhoun. 'The stately Minneapolis residence is known as the Alfred E. Dickey House. Dickey commissioned popular Minneapolis architect William Kenyon to design it for his family. ?William Kenyon did an amazing job,? said Noa (the current owner). "The back yard has the original stucco walls and wrought-iron gates, and it feels like a piece of heaven." So you're thinking just because he has the same name really doesn't mean it's the same person. Think again. One other thing I found on Mr. Dickey: in the 'Cumulative Book Index' there is a list of titles on page 463, one of which is for 'Favorite Nonsense Rhymes, Dickey, A.E., 3305 Calhoun Boulevard, Minneapolis.' Lake Calhoun-- Calhoun Boulevard! Crime solved. The book, by the way, was 'Privately Printed, The University Press, Minneapolis.' And, Yes, it is signed and inscribed. How could it be otherwise? The inscription reads: 'To Mac Martin, Hoping he will enjoy meeting some old friends + making some new ones, Alfred E Dickey.' Mac Martin's small bookplate is neatly affixed to the front inside cover. And it gets better still: who could the guy who gets a book about nonsense rhymes be? A former professor at the University of Minnesota and the 'co-founder of the Better Business Bureau. Mac Martin was a nationally renowned leader in truth in advertising in the early part of this century. His greatest contribution was his leadership in the development of a self-regulatory agency in Minneapolis, through which business could police dishonesty in advertising and selling, an agency later to be internationally known as the Better Business Bureau. This first agency remains the basic model of Better Business Bureau work across the nation and internationally. Known to all as the dean of the Minneapolis advertising industry, Martin was the owner of a highly regarded advertising agency and was the author of numerous advertising campaigns that gained national attention.' Martin was inducted into the Advertising Hall Of Fame in 1962, four years after his passing. On the title page the date of publication is given in an unusual manner: 'XMASMCMVIII'. Also there a little nonsense stanza from the Science Guy Bill Nye (despite being born in 1955!). The stanza reads "Go, Little Booklet, Go; Bearing an honored name; Till everywhere that you have went; They're glad that you have came." Bill Nye really is amazing. I should say something about the book: it is not a booklet. It has the average thickness of a book, but is only 59 pages long. The verso of each page is blank, so there are actually 118 pages. There are five early illustrations, drawings. There are also a number of tiny ones like you see on the title page. The interior of the book is in quite nice shape. The pages are clean, no more than a few inconspicuous spots. No foxing. Little to no creasing. There's a teeny tiny top corner loss on the signed front end paper. There's no other writing to be found in the book. The aforementioned bookplate is the only attachment. There are no markings. So an excellent interior. The flaw: a loss at the top edge of the spine, and a smaller one at the bottom edge. Positively, the loss does not reach the label with the title. As you can see there are two labels on the front cover as well. The only soiling is a darkened area on the rear cover. All four corners have rub-through. The front bottom edge has one small spot of it. The middle page edge is rough-cut. Fun, right?. Seller Inventory # 003866
