Presented here in one small readable volume is the fascinating story of Niagara. Its annals have been brought to light by the work of geologists, and they lend to the region, in addition to its well deserved fame as America's most visited beauty spot, a particular appeal to lovers of science. Science is acquaintanceship with Nature. Niagara is a work of Nature with which thousands annually seek acquaintanceship. However, by a large number the Falls are first viewed with a feeling of unfulfilled anticipation. The freshness of first impressions has been toned down by cinema and photograph, while their deeper significance as a stepping stone backwards into the history of the earth is not revealed to the great majority, and is manifest only to the specialist. Insight into the history of the Cataract discloses to him the third dimension of the spectacle - depth; but, where fascinating vistas, deep into the past and far into the future might be apparent, most of us merely see stones. It is the purpose of this book to excite a keener interest in the origin and story of Niagara, and thereby promote a fuller appreciation and more complete enjoyment of the Cataract and environs. Contents in Four Chapters: Some Geological Agents that Have Been at Work Shaping the Niagara Story, The Escarpment How It Came Into Existence, Niagara, and A Tour of Niagara. Plus an Introduction, Preface, and Supplementary Reading References. There is a List of the 27 Text Figures and the Fifteen Plates.
