BYRNE (Oliver) et BYRNE (John). The Fallacies of Our Own Time. Fallacy of Phrenology. London, Sherwood, Gilbert, and Piper, 1844. 🗪 BYRNE (Oliver) and BYRNE (John). The Fallacies of Our Own Time. Fallacy of Phrenology. London, Sherwood, Gilbert, and Piper, 1844. 8vo, contemporary half sheep, marbled boards. First edition. Oliver Byrne (1810-1880), the Irish mathematician famed for his color-printed Elements of Euclid (1847), here joins his brother John Byrne (1812-1851), based in Norfolk, Virginia, in a polemical refutation of phrenology at the height of its vogue. Applying logic to dismantle the claim that character can be read from the skull's bumps, the work was conceived as the first, never-continued part of a series within the mid-century debate over the sciences of the mind. This copy bears an autograph inscription signed by the author: "To His Excellency Comte St Aulaire &c – &c – &c with the Author's best respects" — Louis-Clair de Beaupoil, comte de Sainte-Aulaire (1778-1854), French ambassador to London (1841-1848) and member of the Académie française. Scarce and rarely seen at auction, the volume is distinguished by this provenance, documenting Byrne's pursuit of illustrious patrons and Anglo-French sociability under the July Monarchy.…

Store description
