Item description from seller

First edition, second impression, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Sclater, from Roberts, 5/4/11". This work offers a lively rebuttal to General Sir Ian Hamilton's Compulsory Service (1910), which argued against universal military training for young men. The recipient was General Sir Henry Sclater, a member of the Army Council from 1914 to 1916. The second impression appeared one month after the first. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover lettered in blind. Spine slightly sunned, extremities bumped, a little soiling to cloth, scattered light foxing, couple of nicks to leaves. A very good copy.
