SECOND ENGLISH EDITION 1669 AND THE FIRST EDITION TO INCLUDE THE ENGLISH VINEYARD VINDICATED BY JOHN ROSE and JOHN EVELYN. The dedication to King Charles II is signed by John Rose and the Preface is signed: Philocepos, i.e. John Evelyn. Small 8vo, 150 x 90 mm, 5¾ x 3½ inches, engraved title page plus 4 engraved plates, 1 folding plate in the Vineyard section has "Chap.5" in lower corner, see Hunt. Pages: [8],1-294, title page for The English Vineyard Vindicated, [12], 13-48, plus [16] pages of the table, the Vintage by John Evelyn on pages 38-49, page 49 wrongly numbered 48. Full speckled calf, gilt lettered morocco label to spine, gilt rules to spine and edges of covers, small engraved bookplate to first pastedown. Professionally rebacked at sometime, 2 tiny holes to inner margin of engraved title page,1 just touching image, tip of 1 corner missing, nowhere near text, small ink splash to 4 top margins in the Vineyard, nowhere near text, small burn hole to 1 leaf affecting 1 letter either side, occasional pale age-browning and tiny spot, old ink signature to bottom margin of engraved title, otherwise a very good copy. The first edition of the English Vineyard was published 3 years earlier in 1666 and is very rare as most copies are reputed to have perished in the Fire of London, the only copy of the first edition I could find, sold at Sotheby's, from "The Collection of Robert S. Pirie", in 2015. The 1669 edition is probably the earliest edition available of the English Vineyard.
