Item description from seller

202 pages. Index. SIGNED by John E. Smith (1816-1897), a Swiss-born jeweler, was one of nine men from Galena, Illinois, including Ulysses S. Grant, to become generals in the Union Army. As colonel in command of the 45th Illinois Volunteer Regiment, Smith fought under Grant at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson and Shiloh. Brevetted a brigadier general in November 1861, he served again under Grant at the Vicksburg campaign, commanding first a brigade and later a division. Transferred to Sherman's army, he fought at Missionary Ridge, and then led the XV Corps during Sherman's capture of Atlanta, march to the sea, and campaign in the Carolinas. Mustered out of volunteer service at war's end, Smith re-joined the regular army as a colonel, and in that capacity commanded the 14th Infantry at Fort Laramie, a strategic point on the Oregon Trail, protecting settlers moving West on the trial and also the telegraph line. Although this area was the scene of major conflicts with the Plains Indians in the 1860s and again from the mid-1870s, it was relatively peaceful during Smith's command. Smith retired in 1874, after receiving a brevet promotion to major general. Spine worn at top, corners bumped and rubbed; small chip at top of spine. Very good. (099) Signed.…
