Item description from seller

First edition (as stated upon copyright page) INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. 318 pages. Hardcover: H 21.5cm x L 14.25cm. Soiled and toned dust jacket chipped and torn and has both front panel and front flap separately detached; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Gray cloth, slight fraying at spine ends. Edges toned. Nancy Hallinan's occasional pencil markings and commentary/notes found in page margins; closed tear at bottom margin of pages 315-316. Author's nine-line ink inscription upon title page: "For Nancy . . | With my love and | deep admiration . . | and envy ( I wish I | could have written | such a book) | Becky | Rebecca Reyher | New York ---." Binding is firm. A good+ copy in a poor dust jacket. With endpaper maps, six-chapter Introduction (pages 17-66), section of b/w plates on unpaged leaves, Epilogue, and Acknowledgements. Acquired from the personal collection of Nancy Hallinan (1921-2014) who authored the critically acclaimed novels "Rough Winds of May" (1955), "A Voice from the Wings" (1965), and "Night Swimmers" (1976) as well as the 1980 O'Henry award winning short story "Women in a Roman Courtyard." Her papers are held by Boston University's Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center. Reyher's inscription is, unfortuantely, quite enigmatic as to what book she is referring. Nancy Hallinan was employed as an editor at several New York publishers and magazines during her long writing career so perhaps the inscription is a vague appreciation of that possible role.
